Bummer Dan’s View of Virginia City, Montana
#87 September 11, 2016
Going on a walk with Mike Gordon is a lot like getting a Montana history lesson. Today we walked where Bummer Dan stuck gold just outside of Virginia City. (Bummer: A term used to describe marauding or foraging soldiers. Although armies on both sides often had rules against foraging or stealing from private residences, some soldiers often found ways to do so.) People apparently got sick of Dan hanging around town, and they kicked him out and told him to go get you own gold. So he did, and he struck it rich! In these hills he found several million dollars of gold! This view is looking toward Virginia City, straight ahead is Boot Hill. It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to enjoy a Sunday walk, followed up with a Sunday painting. It was a pleasure to put some Aspen on the canvas.
